Flattened Aluminum Used Beverage Can (UBC) Specifications
1. SCOPE
This specification covers Flattened Aluminum Used Beverage Can (UBC) Scrap used by Wise Alloys LLC at its Alabama Reclamation operations.
2. APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS
The following documents of the issue in effect on date of request for quotation or purchase order form a part of this specification to the extent specified herein:
2.1 The Aluminum Associations "Guidelines for Handling Molten Aluminum, Second Edition."
3. REQUIREMENTS
All Flattened Aluminum Used Beverage Can Scrap received by Wise Alloys LLC at Alabama Reclamation - conform to the following specifications:
3.1 Product Size: Aluminum cans shall be flattened lengthwise. Loads should be virtually free of "hockey pucks."
3.2 Material Quality Requirements:
3.2.1 Material must be magnetically separated.
3.2.2 Material must be visually free of lead (Pb).
3.2.3 Material should be free of any and all non-aluminum material.
3.2.4 Aluminum items, other than UBCs, are strictly limited to incidental quantities of household foil, foil containers, food cans and aluminum aerosol cans.
3.2.5 Non-domestic metal will be accepted only with prior notification and acceptance by the user plant.
3.2.6 Unsatisfactory findings based on visual inspection are grounds for rejection.
4. LOADING
4.1 A 12-inch or 30.48 cm minimum clearance should be maintained between the trailer roof and the flattened UBCs across the entire length of the load.
4.2 A 2-inch or 5.08 cm minimum clearance should be maintained between the wall and neighboring bale.
4.3 The use of bulkheads is discouraged by Alabama Reclamation.
4.5 Wise Alloys LLC will not be responsible for trailer damage incurred as a result of incorrectly loaded material.
5. SHIPPING DOCUMENTATION
Prior to the arrival of each shipment, a shipping wire must be issued to the receiving plant. A completed bill of lading must accompany each load entering Alabama Reclamation. Shipments with incomplete or improperly filled out shipping documentation will not be received. The receiving facility is not responsible for demurrage incurred as a result of improper documentation.
6. AUDITING
By virtue of shipping material into Alabama Reclamation, the supplier or subcontractor has agreed to afford Wise Alloys LLC the right to verify, at the suppliers or subcontractors premises, that the product/process conforms to specified requirements.
7. PHYSICAL QUALITY
All flattened UBCs received by Alabama Reclamation should be commercially free of all contaminants and shall have passed over a magnetic separator. Observations made by the Scrap Tender shall be sufficient for actions taken through the Grading and Deduct System. Scrap Tenders have been trained to assess levels of contamination in the UBC stream and are knowledgeable of the base levels of contamination inherent in this material stream.
7.1 Shipments found to contain the following are subject to automatic rejection:
1. Medical waste (i.e., hypodermic needles, syringes, I.V. bags, etc.)
2. Free lead
3. Bottle caps
4. Butane lighters
7.2 The following materials are considered to be contaminants:
Moisture
Iron and steel
Free lead
Plastic (all kinds)
Glass
Dirt, sand or other fines
Concrete
Paper and cardboard
Insulation
Bottle caps
Wood
Castings
Trash
Grease, oil and flammable materials
Gravel
Other free heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Brass, etc.)
7.3 Flattened UBCs shall be assessed for product quality using random sampling techniques in association with visual inspection.
7.4 Flattened UBCs not meeting the noted requirements at the users plant discretion will either be rejected or subjected to weight deductions.
7.5 Flattened UBCs unloaded shall be analyzed for moisture and assessed for contamination using a qualitative grading.
7.6 Deductions will be assessed using the Wise Alloys Grading and Deduct System for UBC.
7.7 Items not covered in this specification are subject to special arrangement between user plant and seller.
8. SAFETY
8.1 We will not accept any loads containing the following materials deemed to be dangerous in the shredding and melting process:
Explosives
Live ammunition
Al. Lithium alloys
Gasoline
Propane bottles
Butane lighters
Hypodermic needles
Syringes
Medical wastes
Powders
Unidentifiable materials
Unknown chemicals
Fertilizers
Heavy oxidation
Residue and other materials containing nitrates
Batteries
Free lead
PCBs
Radioactive sources
8.2 Radioactive detection monitors are installed on the scale. All scrap is screened for radioactivity before receipt into the plant. If radioactive material is detected, the driver will be asked to park the truck in a specific location until the radiation is measured with a hand- held monitor, state authorities are contacted and the source of the radiation has been removed by appropriate personnel.
8.3 The shipper agrees that the material shall be free from the above listed items. The shipper shall be responsible for and shall reimburse Wise Alloys for any costs resulting from the inclusion of these items. The shipper shall assume all responsibility for any and all cleanup, reconditioning and associated lost production costs that may be incurred. Any material that is rejected for safety or contamination will be reported via the Aluminum Associations Scrap Rejection Notification program.
9. SPECIFICATION WAIVER
Any deviation from this specification desired by the producing plant shall be approved by Wise Alloys ARO Production Control Manager or his designate.
