3.2 Dimensional

3.2.1 Weight: Sows are to be furnished in nominal 1,000 lb. or 1,200 lb. Sows as specified on the order. All sows should be low profile. Lips should be less than 1"

3.3 External Quality: Sows shall be skimmed so as to be commercially free of dross or oxide and shall have a commercially smooth top and side surface. A normal shrink cavity is acceptable. Sows shall be commercially free of dirt, dust and excessive mold release agents.

3.4 Internal Quality: The sows shall be commercially free of foreign objects, oxide, dross, inclusions, etc. Each sow shall be produced by a single pouring process (monolithic). "Multi-pour" or "capping" the surface with additional metal after the sow is formed is not acceptable. "Cast-in" steel straps or lugs used for handling are not permitted. "Cast-in" lifting rings, if used, shall be of the same alloy. Tapping metal from a furnace shall not be carried out while metal is being charged.

3.5 Identification: Each ingot shall be steel stenciled in minimum 1/2 inch high letters and numerals with the cast number. In addition, each sow (1,000 lb. and 1,200 lb.) is to be marked in crayon with the grade or alloy type and the iron and silicon analysis.

3.6 Packaging: 1,000 lb. And 1,200 lb. Sows
Sows need not be bundled and may be shipped in trucks or box cars as specified on the order. All sows shall be properly braced.

4. QUALITY ASSURANCE

4.1 Responsibility For Inspection
The producing plant is responsible for the performance of all inspection and testing requirements as specified herein. The purchasing plant reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth in this specification where such inspections are deemed necessary to assure that supplies and services conform to prescribed requirements.

4.2 Testing Procedures
Chemical analysis procedures shall conform to appropriate ASTM standards. The analysis shall be determined at least once for each heat, crucible, or specified segment of semi-continuous casting of the sows.

4.3 Certification
The producing plant shall furnish the chemical analysis for each cast to the purchasing plant. The report shall include the cast number, product description, and the quantity. The number of copies to be furnished shall be as specified on the order.

4.3.1 Samples
One properly identified cast sample button representative of the heat, crucible, or other specified segment of a semi-continuous casting run shall be submitted to the purchasing plant for each such identifiable production run.

4.4 Rejection
Sows not conforming to this specification shall be subject to rejection and shall not be shipped without prior written approval of the purchasing plant.

5. ORDERING INFORMATION
Orders must specify any desired options offered in this specification as well as the following:
(1) Number and date or revision of this specification.
(2) Sow size (when a specific size is desired).
(3) Grade required.
(4) Number of copies of chemical analysis certification required (Sec. 4.3).

6. NOTES
6.1 Process Change Evaluations
In those cases where changes in casting practices are contemplated which can affect sow quality, the producing plant shall notify Wise Alloys Plant Metallurgist.
