Kicking Off A Group Fundraising Effort

Your school and community are probably full of aluminum just waiting for an organized recycling effort. Recycling is the perfect fund-raiser for your group -- there is no selling, it is easy to set up, and you get cash on the spot! And you can organize a collection drive to meet a short-term goal, or establish a plan to recycle on an ongoing basis.

  1. Set your recycling goal in relation to your needs. In deciding on how much money your group needs to meet your objectives, keep in mind that ten pounds of aluminum (330 cans) per volunteer is a realistic goal.

  2. Appoint a recycling captain. It helps immensely to have someone in charge.

  3. Spread the word. People will donate their aluminum cans more readily if they know it is for a good cause. Flyers distributed to neighborhood homes can also be a big help. Also, notify the local media as well as neighborhood newsletters.

  4. Can Collection. Establish collection routes and include your group's name and telephone number on each box. Store the aluminum on your grounds in a shed, closet or special bin if you can. Or have volunteers save aluminum at home and then, on a designated day, have a drive.

  5. Keep track of your cans. Keep an eye on your goal. Tracking your overall progress keeps everyone excited about your recycling effort.

  6. Recognize recyclers. Ask local businesses to donate prizes for the top volunteers. But there are lots of fun, free rewards as well. Ask one of your group leaders to shave their beard or color their hair when you reach your goal! Make it fun!
